Lecce is the baroque heart of Italy’s Salento region, a compact city whose streets and main squares are defined by richly carved buildings made from local pietra leccese, a warm, honey-colored limestone that takes elaborate sculptural detail. The Basilica of Santa Croce and the cathedral ensemble around Piazza del Duomo show façades crowded with grotesques, angels and floral reliefs; their shallow, high-relief carving creates strong texture that reads especially well in side light. In Piazza Sant’Oronzo fragments of a Roman amphitheater sit amid modern urban life, giving scale and a layered historical foreground for shots. Narrow alleys funnel light into chiaroscuro compositions and open onto terraces and wrought-iron balconies that punctuate façades with rhythmic shadows; late afternoon sun brings out the stone’s ochre tones while brief rains leave shallow reflections on cobbles. Visitors should respect church interiors as sacred spaces when photographing.
