Le Passe-Muraille is a bronze sculpture embedded in a stone wall on Place Marcel Aymé in Montmartre’s 18th arrondissement. Created by actor and sculptor Jean Marais in 1989, it honors writer Marcel Aymé, who lived nearby, and his celebrated short story “The Man Who Walked Through Walls.” The figure represents Dutilleul, a modest civil servant who discovers he can pass through solid walls but ultimately becomes trapped in one. His straining pose, emerging hands and contrasting textures of bronze and masonry make the work instantly recognizable; repeated contact from visitors has polished parts of the figure, especially one hand.
