Le Due Sorelle are the twin limestone stacks rising from the Adriatic just off the crescent beach of Torre dell'Orso on the Salento coast of Apulia. Formed by coastal erosion, the two upright pillars stand close together and act as an immediate focal point when composing a shot from the sandy shore or the low cliffs at either end of the bay. Visually they provide strong vertical counterpoints to the horizontal sweep of sand and sea: pale, textured rock against vivid Mediterranean blue, with scale easily shown by silhouettes of bathers or boats in the foreground. Light at low sun enhances surface relief and casts long reflections on calm water; wind and swell simplify or fragment that reflection for different moods. The stacks are offshore features rather than landforms to climb, so the classic view remains from the beach, promenade, or small craft.
