Latomie del Paradiso are the deep, tree-filled stone quarries carved into the bedrock of the Parco Archeologico della Neapolis in Siracusa. Hewn by ancient hands to supply building stone, the latomie later sheltered prisoners and became shaded public gardens; the result is a layered site where vertical rock faces, horizontal quarry cuts and overhanging vegetation meet. For photographers the slot-like openings and tall, striated walls create dramatic vertical compositions and high-contrast light: shafts of sunlight pick out textured surfaces while the green canopy and scattered cypresses soften the stone. Small human figures emphasize scale here; pathways and terraces frame viewlines but remain within the archaeological park’s boundaries.
