📍 Netherlands
The Landingsmonument in Westkapelle (Walcheren, Netherlands) is a monument dedicated to the allied forces who marched ashore into the enemy-controlled island of Walcheren during WW2. Designed by P. Corten, it is an imposing and powerful symbol of the war and marks the spot where the first soldiers landed their boats during the Operation Infatuate in November 1944. The monument stands near the beach and was unveiled in August 1959. On the back of the monument hangs a commemorative plaque with the names of all the fallen members of the Allied Forces. Nearby, there are bunkers, pillboxes and other traces of the war that remain today. Be sure to explore the area for a real feel for the conflict and for some unique views of Walcheren.
