📍 From Pine Bluff Campground, United States
Lake Superior lies north of Shingleton along Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where the inland community serves as a gateway toward the Pictured Rocks shoreline. Known in Anishinaabemowin as Gichigami, the lake is the world’s largest freshwater lake by surface area and has long shaped Indigenous travel, regional trade, fishing, and settlement. Here, its scale feels oceanic: a clean horizon, cold blue-green water, wind-built waves, and fast-moving weather contrast with forested headlands, pale beaches, and the layered sandstone cliffs of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Changing light can shift the water from silver to deep cobalt, while autumn foliage and winter ice give the coast distinctly seasonal color and texture.
