Lake Serene is an alpine lake beneath the towering cliffs of Mount Index in Washington’s Cascade Range, near the town of Index and the Skykomish Valley. Its enclosed mountain basin creates a striking contrast between dark water, evergreen forest and pale rock walls, with snow lingering in the gullies above the shore. In calm conditions, reflections double the cliffs and emphasize how abruptly the mountain rises from the lake. The lake’s outflow feeds Bridal Veil Falls, another landmark on the approach. Reaching the shore requires a sustained uphill hike on the Lake Serene Trail, including steep switchbacks and numerous stairs; a separate spur leads toward the falls.
