📍 United States
Lake Ellen Wilson is a long subalpine lake in Glacier National Park’s backcountry, set along the Gunsight Pass Trail between Sperry Chalet and Gunsight Pass in northwestern Montana. The lake fills a steep, glacier-carved basin enclosed by rugged cliffs, talus slopes, and lingering snowfields. High trail switchbacks reveal its elongated shape and striking scale, with blue-green water contrasting against pale rock and sparse alpine vegetation; in calm conditions, the surrounding walls reflect across the surface. There is no road access, and reaching the lake requires a demanding mountain hike. Overnight stays in Glacier’s backcountry require the appropriate permit.
