Lake Clearwater lies in the Ashburton Lakes basin of inland Canterbury, beside a small settlement of holiday cottages and close to Hakatere Conservation Park. Open tussock country and mountain ranges give the lake a distinctly South Island high-country setting, with few trees to interrupt the broad horizon. On calm days, the water reflects the surrounding slopes and expansive skies; in wind, its textured surface adds a more rugged character. Motorised craft are not permitted on the lake, helping preserve its quiet atmosphere and making small boats, kayaks and shoreline activity part of the scene.
