📍 Spain
Laguna Negra de Urbión is a glacial lake in the Sierra de Urbión, near Vinuesa and the Santa Inés mountain pass in northern Soria, Castilla y León. At around 1,750 metres above sea level, it occupies a basin enclosed by steep rock walls and woodland of Scots pine and beech. The surrounding cliffs and forest shade contribute to the dark appearance of the water that gives the lake its name. Antonio Machado incorporated this landscape into La tierra de Alvargonzález, connecting it with one of his best-known narrative poems. The lake’s distinctive visual character comes from the contrast between its dark surface, the rugged cliffs above it and the wooded shoreline; when the water is still, reflections bring those vertical rock faces into the foreground.
