Lago di Misurina is a high-altitude natural lake in the Dolomites, beside the small resort of Misurina in Veneto’s Cadore region. Set at about 1,754 metres, it is framed by the Cristallo, Sorapiss and Cadini di Misurina mountain groups, with pale limestone walls rising above dark conifer forests. The shoreline’s hotels and boathouses give scale to the surrounding peaks, while still water can produce crisp reflections and layered compositions of architecture, forest and rock. In winter the frozen lake takes on a different historical resonance: it hosted the speed-skating events of the 1956 Cortina Winter Olympics, when Olympic races were still held on natural ice.
