Lago de Atitlán is a volcanic-caldera lake in Guatemala’s western highlands, with Tzununá sitting on its northern shore in the department of Sololá. Steep slopes rise behind the village, while the lake opens southward toward the volcanoes San Pedro, Tolimán and Atitlán, whose distinct silhouettes give the landscape its recognizable skyline. The surrounding settlements are home to Kaqchikel and Tz’utujil Maya communities, making the shores a living cultural landscape rather than simply a scenic backdrop. From Tzununá’s waterfront, passenger boats and the village dock provide a human-scale foreground against the broad water and volcanic ridges; changing cloud cover can reveal or conceal the summits and shift the contrast between the lake and mountains.
