La Mer is a beachfront district on Dubai’s Jumeirah coast, facing the Arabian Gulf. Its original design combined sandy beaches and palms with colorful beach huts, murals, timber decking and weathered industrial-style façades—a deliberately informal contrast to the city’s glass towers. Painted pedestrian lanes and textured storefronts gave the waterfront a recognizable visual identity beyond the beach itself. The former La Mer South has since been redeveloped as J1 Beach, with beach clubs and seaside restaurants, so older photographs of La Mer’s shops and promenades capture an earlier chapter of Dubai’s changing shoreline.
