La Mer de Glace - Montenvers, in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France is one of Europe's largest and most spectacular glaciers. This grand glacier covers an area of more than seven kilometers in length, making it one of the largest in the French Alps. Consisting of an ice river, this breathtaking natural wonder is home to an array of crevasses, seracs, caves and stunning ice sculptures, making it an ideal destination for sightseeing, glacier walking and landscapes photography. Situated at an altitude of 1909m, La Mer de Glace is accessible via a historic train (Montenvers) which was opened in 1908. Tourists accompanying the Montenvers train to look over the glacier receive a comprehensive guided walk by local glacier guides.
