La Mano — formally titled Hombre emergiendo a la vida — is the large concrete sculpture of five fingers pushing out of the sand on Playa Brava in Punta del Este, Uruguay. Placed where the beach meets the Atlantic surf, it registers visually as a human-scale interruption in an otherwise horizontal seascape, its rough, weathered surfaces contrasting with smooth wet sand and frothy waves. The work is by sculptor Mario Irarrázabal and has become an icon of the resort, framing both solitary portraits and wide-angle compositions that pair its verticality with the low skyline. Photographically, look for strong silhouettes at low sun, mirrored reflections on damp sand after tides, and the pattern of footprints and wind-rippled textures that emphasize scale and the meeting of land and sea.
