La Hougue Bie is an ancient Neolithic passage grave in Jersey, an island in the Channel Islands. It is estimated to be around 8000 years old and is made up of two parts: a cavernous inner chamber and a mound of earth covering it. Inside the cellar, the chamber itself is over 10 metres in length and made up of granite blocks. Human remains have been found inside, alongside evidence of the ancient rituals and offerings that took place here.
One of the most interesting features of La Hougue Bie is the prehistoric mound, or tumulus, sitting atop the chamber. The mound is 11 metres in diameter and supports the vision of an ancient astronomers observatory due to its alignment with certain stars. On the south-east side, an altar piece was carved from shelly sandstone and suggests further evidence of ritualistic activity. It is said that offerings of grain, mead, and milk were once brought here. In 1954, it was designated as a Historic Monument of Jersey, and today its remains open for visitors seeking to explore this remarkable place. Guided tours of the Neolithic passage grave are available, taking you up close to the ancient chamber and mound.
