La grotta di Villa Barbaro forms part of the nymphaeum behind the Renaissance villa at Maser, in the foothills north of Treviso. Designed by Andrea Palladio for the Barbaro family in the 16th century, the residence extends its classical architecture into this ornamental garden setting. The nymphaeum frames a natural spring with a semicircular wall, sculpted figures and niches, drawing on the ancient Roman tradition of retreats dedicated to water and the nymphs. The grotto’s rough textures contrast with the formal architectural surround, while the enclosing curve brings the statues into a layered composition—a more intimate scene than the villa’s broad, symmetrical front.
