La Basilique Notre Dame de Fourvière stands atop the Fourvière hill, which overlooks the city of Lyon in Eastern France. Built in 1875 and consecrated a year later, the basilica has become an iconic symbol of the city. Its sandstone walls, soaring towers and seven chapels, dedicated to various aspects of the Virgin Mary, has made La Basilique Notre Dame de Fourvière the most important Catholic pilgrimage site in the country. Its splendid architecture, which takes inspiration from the Italian Renaissance and Byzantine styles, adds to the majestic appearance of the basilica. A path around the basilica, with majestic views of the hills and city, gives visitors a great chance to explore the area with picture worthy views of the heart of the city. Moreover, the underground crypt in the basilica holds a museum of religious artifacts and artworks. Mass everyday, held under the basilica’s ornate marble ceiling and exquisite mosaics, offer the perfect finale to the sightseeing.
