Kunming Lake forms the broad centerpiece of the Summer Palace in northwest Beijing, separating the palace buildings on Longevity Hill from islands, causeways, and pavilions arranged around the water. During the Qing dynasty, earlier reservoirs were expanded into an imperial garden lake, with excavated earth used to enlarge Longevity Hill; its landscape design drew strongly on the West Lake scenery of Hangzhou. The lake’s most recognizable features include the elegant Seventeen-Arch Bridge leading to Nanhu Island, the willow-lined West Causeway, and distant views of the Tower of Buddhist Incense rising above the northern shore. Calm conditions bring clear reflections and layered compositions of water, bridges, hills, and painted architecture, while winter ice creates a markedly different, austere geometry.
