Kumbhalgarh Fort crowns a high ridge of the Aravalli Hills in Rajasthan’s Rajsamand district, northwest of Udaipur. Built in the 15th century under the Mewar ruler Rana Kumbha, the vast stronghold served as a refuge for the kingdom’s rulers and is closely associated with Maharana Pratap, who was born here. Its ramparts extend for roughly 36 kilometres, folding across the dry, forested hills and enclosing gateways, reservoirs, palaces, and numerous Hindu and Jain temples. Together with five other fortresses, Kumbhalgarh forms the UNESCO-listed Hill Forts of Rajasthan. The most distinctive photographs emphasize the contrast between the massive stone walls and the layered Aravalli landscape; higher sections near Badal Mahal reveal the fort’s scale, while the curving battlements create strong leading lines across the ridges.
