Kronverkskaya Embankment follows the Kronverk Strait opposite the Peter and Paul Fortress, on St Petersburg’s Petrograd Side. The narrow waterway separates the embankment from Hare Island, where the fortress marks the city’s founding in 1703. The embankment’s name recalls the kronverk, an outer defensive work protecting the fortress from the north. That military history remains visible in the horseshoe-shaped red-brick arsenal housing the Artillery Museum, with historic guns displayed outside. Across the water, the fortress’s low ramparts contrast with the slender golden spire of the Peter and Paul Cathedral. The strait, bridge crossings and layered fortifications make this a distinctive setting for photographs that connect the city’s waterways with its military and imperial origins.
