📍 Poland
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a former Franciscan church near the Old Town Square in Toruń, one of the city’s distinctive brick Gothic landmarks. Built largely in the 14th century, it has a tall, towerless silhouette that reflects the Franciscans’ architectural restraint. Its long red-brick walls, pointed windows and steep gables give the exterior a markedly different profile from Toruń’s towered churches. Inside, three lofty aisles rise to ribbed vaults, while medieval wall paintings and carved Gothic choir stalls preserve traces of the friars’ religious and artistic world. The mausoleum of Anna Vasa, a Swedish princess and sister of Poland’s King Sigismund III, recalls the building’s later period as a Lutheran church. For photographs, the contrast between the austere brick exterior and the richly layered interior is especially revealing, with the repeated arches emphasizing the scale and rhythm of the hall.
