The Church of the Holy Name of Jesus, also known as the University Church, stands beside the main University of Wrocław building in the Old Town, close to the Oder River. Built by the Jesuits in the late 17th century on the site of a former ducal castle, it reflects their role in the city’s religious and academic life. Its richly decorated Baroque interior combines gilded ornament, sculptural altars and ceiling frescoes by Austrian painter Johann Michael Rottmayr. The frescoes blend painted architecture with figures and clouds, creating an illusion of space beyond the vault. A view along the nave reveals the relationship between this overhead spectacle and the high altar, while closer compositions bring out the contrasts between pale architectural surfaces, gold decoration and richly colored painting.
