The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Summo stands on Ostrów Tumski, Poznań’s cathedral island and one of the city’s earliest centres of power. This compact, 15th-century brick Gothic church occupies ground associated with the palace of Mieszko I, Poland’s first historical ruler; archaeological discoveries beneath and beside it connect the site with the beginnings of the Polish state and its Christian history. The Latin phrase “in summo” refers to its elevated position in the former stronghold. Buttresses, pointed windows and a decorative stepped gable give the small building a distinctive silhouette. Its scale contrasts with the neighbouring cathedral, while the patterned brickwork makes the façade as rewarding a subject as the wider island setting.
