๐ Netherlands
Koningshavenbrug, commonly known as "De Hef," is a striking vertical-lift bridge in Rotterdam, Netherlands. It was completed in 1927 and stands as a significant example of early 20th-century industrial architecture. The bridge was originally built to carry train traffic over the Koningshaven, facilitating connections between the north and south of Rotterdam. Its distinctive steel structure and lift mechanism, which raises the center span to allow ships to pass underneath, make it an engineering marvel of its time.
De Hef was decommissioned in 1993 after the construction of a rail tunnel, but it remains a cherished historical landmark. Its iconic status was reinforced when it was temporarily dismantled in 2014 for restoration and reassembled, preserving its historical integrity. While no longer in operational use, De Hef continues to be a popular tourist attraction, symbolizing Rotterdam's resilience and industrial heritage, often featured in films and local events.
