
Kongobu-ji Temple is the head temple of the Shingon Sect of Japanese Buddhism and the spiritual center of the mountaintop town of Koya, Japan. The temple grounds are composed of a garden, an inner compound and a pagoda, and offer a rare glimpse into one of Japan's most powerful sects of Buddhism. The main building of the temple, Daishi-Hall, is located in the inner compound and houses a statue of Kukai, the founder of the Shingon Sect. The garden, known as the “ocean of moss”, features a variety of rare moss species, stone lanterns and ponds and offers a peaceful view for visitors. Visitors can also explore the treasure house, which contains various items related to Kukai and other Buddhist statues. Kongobu-ji Temple is a marvel to behold and the perfect setting for communing with the divine.
