Kölner Dom, or Cologne Cathedral, rises beside Köln Hauptbahnhof near the Rhine, anchoring the city center with its two 157-meter Gothic spires. Construction began in 1248 to house the Shrine of the Three Kings, paused for centuries, and was completed in 1880 according to the medieval design. Although damaged during the Second World War, the cathedral remained standing amid the devastated city and became a powerful symbol of Cologne’s endurance. Its dark, intricately carved façade rewards close views with layers of portals, saints, pinnacles, and tracery, while the vast interior draws the eye through soaring columns toward the choir and stained glass. From across the Rhine, especially near the Hohenzollern Bridge, the paired spires form Cologne’s defining skyline. The cathedral is an active Roman Catholic place of worship, so access may be limited during services and quiet, respectful behavior is expected.
