Københavns Domhus
📍 Denmark
Københavns Domhus is the neoclassical courthouse overlooking Nytorv in central Copenhagen, home to Copenhagen City Court. Designed by Christian Frederik Hansen and completed in 1815, it originally combined the functions of courthouse and town hall; the municipal government moved to the present City Hall in 1905. Its broad staircase, six Ionic columns and triangular pediment give the façade the monumental character of an ancient temple. Above the columns, the inscription “Med Lov skal man Land bygge”—“With law shall the land be built”—draws on the medieval Law of Jutland, connecting the architecture to Denmark’s legal tradition. From across Nytorv, the open square reveals the building’s strong symmetry and the contrast between its restrained classical frontage and the narrower historic façades nearby.
