The Kalouts near Band-e Kahnuj are desert landforms carved from sediment by wind and occasional runoff. Ridges and steep-sided mounds rise above eroded corridors, giving the open landscape the appearance of earthen walls and streets. Light and shadow reveal the texture of their layered surfaces and make the scale of these formations easier to grasp.
