Klingentor marks the northern entrance to Rothenburg ob der Tauber’s historic old town and forms part of its remarkably intact medieval defenses. The tall gate tower rises above a narrow arched passage at the end of Klingengasse, beside St. Wolfgang’s Church, a fortified church incorporated into the town wall. Beyond its defensive role, the tower also served as part of Rothenburg’s early water system, holding a reservoir that supplied public fountains. From inside the old town, the curving street and close-set houses frame the tower; from outside the walls, its steep roof, pale masonry, adjoining church, and ramparts reveal the layered architecture of the fortified boundary.
