This Cistercian monastery was founded by the Count of Alnwick in 1152 and was one of the most important abbeys in the north of England. The remains of the abbey are both picturesque and majestic, consisting of a three story gatehouse, walls decorated with gargoyles, and ruins of the seven towers. Visitors to the site will find much of the architecture has been preserved and they can still enter the chapter house, cloister and refectory.
