Kioto, located in central Japan, is a city steeped in tradition and culture, making it one of the most important tourist destinations in the country. The city has many historical, religious and natural attractions, including the famous Kinkakuji or Temple of the Golden Pavilion and the Grand Shrines of Fushimi Inari. The old Gion District features 17th-century townhouses and views of traditional Japanese architecture. The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is a prime spot for a peaceful stroll. West Gate, or Rakuchuyacho Nijo, is located at the northernmost point of the Imperial Palace. It dates from the 16th century, and is open to the public. The gate displays classic Japanese carvings and a complex network of gates, making it a great spot to take in the history of the city. There are many museums to explore, including the Kyoto National Museum and the Museum of Kyoto. Shopping spots abound in the bustling streets of Pontocho and the Nishiki Market.
