📍 From Inside, United Kingdom
King’s College Chapel stands at the heart of King’s College, between King’s Parade and the lawns beside the River Cam. Begun in 1446 under Henry VI and completed in 1515, it is a defining work of English Perpendicular Gothic architecture. Its vast interior is unified by soaring windows, richly carved screens and the world’s largest fan-vaulted stone ceiling, whose repeating geometry creates a striking sense of height and symmetry. Much of the stained glass dates from the 16th century, while Rubens’s Adoration of the Magi hangs behind the altar. Outside, the chapel’s pinnacled silhouette dominates views from the Backs; inside, side light reveals the vault’s pale texture and colored reflections from the glass. The chapel is also closely associated with the Choir of King’s College and the annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, broadcast internationally on Christmas Eve.
