Kimmeridge Bay
📍 United Kingdom
Kimmeridge Bay is a rocky inlet below the village of Kimmeridge on Dorset’s Isle of Purbeck, within the Jurassic Coast. Its dark shale cliffs and broad stone ledges expose sedimentary layers formed in an ancient sea, making the geology visible in the shoreline’s stepped profile. At low tide, flat shelves stretch out into the bay, broken by shallow pools and bands of seaweed; these strong horizontal lines distinguish the scene from Dorset’s sandy beaches. Above the eastern side stands the circular Clavell Tower, a coastal folly moved inland when erosion threatened its original position. Its pale walls provide a striking contrast to the dark rocks below and a recognizable landmark against the coastal skyline.
