Kilmainham Gaol is a former prison located in Kilmainham, Ireland. Built in 1796, it once held some of the most famous Irish rebels sent to jail by British forces. The prison is now open to the public as a museum and historic site, and visitors can explore the cells, the courtyard, and yard to gain insight into life in the prison between 1796 and 1924. There is a visitor center with exhibitions about the history of the Gaol, including letters and photographs. Admission fee covers an audio tour, which is an excellent way to explore the building and its history. Visitors can also learn about the various prison uprisings and see the memorial erected to honor over 500 Irish revolutionaries that were executed here. Lastly, the Kilmainham Gaol has a cafe and gift shop.
