Kilmainham Gaol is a former prison located in Kilmainham, Ireland. It is now a museum, open to the public. It provides an insight into the harsh living conditions of prisoners between 1796-1924. It was the scene of many notable executions, including those of the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising. The Gaol is a popular tourist destination and provides a fascinating look into Irish history. When at Kilmainham Gaol, be sure to also visit the adjacent Old Museum building which houses exhibitions about the many prisoners and their stories.
