Kilkenny Castle is one of the most important historical sites in Ireland - and one of Kilkenny's top attractions. Located in the heart of the city, the castle is an impressive 12th century structure built by William Marshal, the first Earl of Pembroke. The castle has been through many changes and developments throughout its long history. Today, it has been carefully restored to as closely as possible match the original structure and is now open to visitors.
The grounds of the castle offer a wonderfully tranquil and picturesque space to explore. Highlights include the State Drawing Room with its beautifully preserved interior, the Gothic-style Long Gallery with its exquisite tapestries, and the outstanding Great Hall with its ornate fireplace. There's also a Victorian Garden, a Castle Garden, and the Kilkenny Castle Rose Garden. The latter is full of vibrant colors and fragrances, with a distinctive sloping design that steps down the grounds towards the River Nore. The garden is the perfect spot for a peaceful walk and a picnic.
