Khan el-Khalili
📍 Egypt
Khan el-Khalili is one of Cairo’s most iconic and bustling marketplaces. First established in 1382 during the days of Mamluk sultans, it wasn’t until the 19th century that it truly expanded and became a major trading hub for the city, and a major tourist attraction. Here, you’ll find it full of narrow alleyways lined with stalls, boutiques, and shops selling everything from spices, perfumes, clothes, and furniture to antiques, jewelry, and souvenirs. Khan el-Khalili also offers plenty in the way of food and entertainment. In the streets around the bazaar, you’ll find plenty of cafes, restaurants, and snack stands, as well as the famous El Fishawi Tea House, a must-visit for any traveler. For entertainment, there’s a great variety of traditional music and belly dancers, as well as shisha and teahouses. Khan el-Khalili is a great place to experience the hustle and bustle of downtown Cairo, get lost in the labyrinth of alleyways, and find plenty of bargains!
