The Western Group is the best-preserved concentration of Khajuraho’s medieval temples, set within a landscaped archaeological complex in Madhya Pradesh. Built under the Chandela dynasty mainly in the 10th and 11th centuries, these sandstone monuments are celebrated for their soaring Nagara-style towers, elevated platforms and densely carved walls. Kandariya Mahadeva dominates the skyline with a clustered silhouette resembling a mountain peak, while Lakshmana and Vishvanatha temples reveal layered bands of deities, musicians, dancers, mythical creatures and scenes of courtly life. The famous erotic figures form only a small part of this broader sculptural vision. Low, angled light emphasizes the warm sandstone and deep relief, while wider views capture the rhythmic progression of shikharas above the lawns. The group forms part of the UNESCO-listed Khajuraho monuments; Matangeshvara Temple remains an active place of worship, so visitors should observe temple etiquette there.
