📍 India
Key Gompa, also written Ki or Kee Monastery, is a Tibetan Buddhist complex above Key village in Himachal Pradesh’s Spiti Valley, near Kaza and overlooking the Spiti River. Its tightly clustered, whitewashed buildings rise in irregular tiers around a rocky hill, giving the monastery a fortress-like silhouette shaped by centuries of rebuilding in this harsh Himalayan landscape. The surrounding slopes are largely treeless, so the ochre earth, deep blue sky and bright walls create strong contrasts, while wider viewpoints across the valley reveal the monastery’s scale against the river plain and high ridges. Inside are prayer halls and collections of Buddhist murals, manuscripts and ritual objects. As this remains an active religious institution, visitors should dress respectfully, keep noise low and ask before photographing interiors or monks.
