The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady stands on Káptalan Hill in Győr’s historic center, beside the Bishop’s Castle and above the meeting of the city’s rivers. Seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Győr, it developed from an 11th-century foundation through successive Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, and later alterations. Its layered interior includes the Gothic Héderváry Chapel, the silver-gilt herm containing a relic of Saint Ladislaus I, and richly colored Baroque frescoes associated with Franz Anton Maulbertsch. The cathedral also houses the revered Weeping Madonna, an Irish devotional image brought to Győr in the 17th century. From surrounding old-town streets, the pale façade and red roofs form a defining part of the Káptalan Hill skyline; inside, gilded altars, painted vaults, and patterned stone create a dramatic contrast to the restrained exterior.
