St. Joseph Cathedral is Sofia’s Roman Catholic co-cathedral, standing near Serdika in the city’s historic centre and sharing the seat of the Diocese of Sofia and Plovdiv. The present church was consecrated in 2006, replacing its predecessor destroyed during the Second World War bombing of Sofia. Pope John Paul II laid its foundation stone during his 2002 visit to Bulgaria. Its modern façade, pitched roof and slender bell tower give it a distinctive outline among the capital’s predominantly Orthodox churches. Nearby, the Sofia Synagogue, Banya Bashi Mosque and St. Nedelya Orthodox Church place it within a compact cluster of religious landmarks that reflects the city’s longstanding diversity.
