Dubrovnik Cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, stands in the heart of the walled Old Town beside the Rector’s Palace. The present Roman Baroque church replaced an earlier cathedral damaged in the devastating 1667 earthquake, continuing centuries of worship on the site. Its pale stone façade, sculpted portal and broad staircase contrast with the compact medieval streets, while the large dome is a defining feature of Dubrovnik’s red-roofed skyline, especially from the city walls. Inside, the main altar displays a polyptych of the Assumption associated with Titian and his workshop, and the cathedral treasury preserves important religious objects connected with St Blaise, Dubrovnik’s patron saint. As this is an active Catholic cathedral, quiet and respectful conduct is expected during services.
