Katedrala Svetog Duje, the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, stands at the heart of Diocletian’s Palace in Split’s historic center. Its main body began as the Roman emperor Diocletian’s mausoleum and was later converted into a Christian cathedral dedicated to Saint Domnius, a bishop of nearby Salona who was martyred during Diocletian’s persecutions. The compact interior preserves ancient columns and stonework alongside later Christian furnishings, while the carved wooden doors by medieval master Andrija Buvina depict scenes from the life of Christ. Outside, the octagonal Roman structure and tall Romanesque bell tower rise directly above the Peristyle, creating one of Split’s most recognizable compositions. The tower also offers elevated views across the palace roofs, waterfront, and surrounding hills.
