The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist stands in Toruń’s medieval Old Town, close to the Vistula River. Built in stages from the 13th to the 15th century, this monumental brick Gothic church was a principal parish church long before becoming a cathedral in 1992. Its broad square tower, pointed windows and deep red masonry give it a distinctive presence among the surrounding townhouses. Inside, the lofty hall-church interior combines Gothic architecture with richly decorated altarpieces and chapels. A medieval baptismal font connects the building to Nicolaus Copernicus, who was baptized here in 1473, while the tower houses the Tuba Dei bell, cast in 1500. Views from the nearby streets emphasize the contrast between the cathedral’s massive brick walls and the narrower façades of the Old Town, making its scale an essential part of the scene.
