Wrocław’s Cathedral of St John the Baptist stands on Ostrów Tumski, the city’s oldest historic quarter beside the Oder River, and is the seat of the Roman Catholic archdiocese. Its present Gothic form developed from the 13th century, with twin spired towers that define this part of the riverfront skyline. Severe destruction in 1945 was followed by extensive reconstruction, making the cathedral a testament to Wrocław’s postwar recovery. Red-brick walls, carved stone details and later Baroque chapels reveal successive layers of church architecture. Along ulica Katedralna, the towers frame the street’s axial approach; views from across the river place the cathedral within the wider ensemble of Ostrów Tumski’s churches and waterfront buildings.
