Kastellet is a 17th-century, star-shaped citadel in Copenhagen, close to Langelinie and the Little Mermaid. Begun under Christian IV and expanded under Frederik III, it formed part of the city’s defenses, with five bastions, grassy ramparts and a surrounding moat. Inside, red-painted barracks and a church give the military compound the ordered character of a small town, while a windmill stands on one of the ramparts. The star-shaped geometry is clearest from above; at ground level, the moat’s reflections, sloping green earthworks and repeated barrack windows define the scene. The contrast between defensive scale and domestic-looking buildings is central to Kastellet’s visual identity. It remains an active military site, although the grounds and rampart paths are open to the public.
