📍 Germany
Karl-Marx-Allee is the monumental boulevard running east from central Berlin through Friedrichshain, best known for the grand residential ensembles between Strausberger Platz and Frankfurter Tor. Rebuilt in the 1950s as Stalinallee, it became a showcase of East German socialist classicism, with broad carriageways, formal symmetry, arcaded shops and apartment façades clad in pale ceramic tiles. Construction workers on the avenue helped ignite the East German uprising of 17 June 1953. Its scale is clearest from the central sightline: twin towers frame Frankfurter Tor, while Strausberger Platz forms a spacious architectural set piece at the western end. Repeating windows, ornate entrances and original shop signs offer close-up detail that contrasts with the boulevard’s imposing geometry.
