Kanisa la Kristo, or Christ Church Cathedral, stands in Stone Town’s Mkunazini area on the site of Zanzibar’s former slave market. Built in the nineteenth century as an Anglican cathedral, it carries particular historical weight: nearby preserved chambers and the slave memorial confront the island’s role in the East African slave trade and the later abolition campaign. The building blends Gothic forms with local coral-stone construction, featuring pointed arches, a high vaulted interior and a prominent square tower. Its pale, weathered masonry, deep window openings and strong vertical lines contrast with Stone Town’s tightly packed streets, while the memorial’s sculpted figures provide a stark and solemn photographic subject. Respectful dress and quiet behavior are appropriate inside the active church and around the memorial.
