Kandariya Mahadeva Temple is the largest and tallest temple in Khajuraho’s Western Group of Monuments, part of the UNESCO-listed ensemble in Madhya Pradesh. Built by the Chandela rulers in the 11th century and dedicated to Shiva, it is a masterwork of northern Indian Nagara architecture. Its sandstone structure rises from a high platform through a rhythmic sequence of halls to a soaring central shikhara, clustered with smaller spires to evoke a mountain peak. The exterior is densely carved with deities, celestial figures, musicians, dancers, animals, and erotic couples, while the inner sanctuary contains a Shiva linga. From the long side, the repeated projections and ascending roofline show the temple’s scale most clearly; angled sunlight brings depth to the intricate reliefs and warm sandstone.
